Congressman Hinojosa Announces $1.6 Million In Grants To Add Law Enforcement Officers To Streets In Deep South Texas

Congressman Rubén Hinojosa today announced $1.2 million in grants to fund the hiring and rehiring of 9 law enforcement officers under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

“This is great news for the communities involved as they will benefit from extra law enforcement resources” said Congressman Hinojosa. “This is proof once more that the Recovery Act is working to create jobs. Every little bit helps and I am proud these communities will be safer and more protected. Our law enforcement officers are exemplary public servants and we need to give them all the help we can.”

The grants will be administered by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) through the federal agency's COPS Hiring Recovery Program, and will be awarded to 4 law enforcement agencies from across the Rio Grande Valley.

The grants will provide 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for entry level officer positions over a three year period. Police departments receiving the grants will then be required to retain the grant funded positions for a fourth year.
